Create a family tree with Geni

geni family treeCreating a family tree seems like a boring thing to do. Don’t get me wrong, its great to know where you’ve come from, but jotting it down on paper or in a massive, messy Excel document are not that appealing. Enter Geni. Michael Arrington broke the news on this intuitive family tree tool created entirely in Flash last week, and it just launched on Tuesday. Geni is like a living organism that beautifully expands your family information, and molds in to others on the web. Its ultimate goal is to create a family tree of the world. When you start to enter your information, you have the option of entering email addresses for each person added. Geni will then send out the tree to them as well. They add their data, thus expanding the tree further. It’s a far cry from the pen and paper most trees are created on, and also much more interesting to navigate through.

RubyLane

Source: Spungle: RubyLane (Verdict: What a site!)

We’ll admit it, we love eBay.  However, one of things that we hate about eBay is the fact that shady sellers sometimes dupe you in to viewing their product by including garbage in their titles and descriptions.  Also, sometimes you’re in the mood to shop through fine vintage goods and a simple search for “vintage” produces tens of thousands results.  So, what do you do you when you’re looking for antiques, collectibles fine art and vintage merchandise?  Take a walk down RubyLane and start the shopping!
We logged on to Ruby Lane and were pleasantly surprised by the speed and simplicity of the site.  We were in search of a vintage mens briefcase.  After a quick search for “briefcase” we were brought to a selection of briefcases available from reliable sellers, and before we knew it, we found our dream bag.  That simple!

Now, to be fair, one of us has a bag that is extremely similar to this one, so we’re actually not going to purchase it and leave it available for a lucky reader who’s looking to buy a bag at a steal of price.  But, using this bag as an example, you’d be amazed by what you can find.  It’s like having a high-quality thrift shop right in apartment sans the odor of mothballs.

With over 165 million hits a month Ruby Lane we’re obviously not the only ones that are in love with this site!
So, what are you waiting for?  Take a stroll down the magical Ruby Lane for some high quality easy to find luxury vintage items. We promise you’ll love it!

Travel with Kayak.com

kayak.com

Kayak was created by the founders of the popular travel sites Orbitz, Travelocity, and Expedia. Apparently their non-compete agreements are up because the built the mother of all travel sites.
What they do is aggregate all of the data and search for the best deals every time a user submits a request. My wife used them recently for a trip to Las Vegas ( a girls weekend out thing) and she saved close to $150 once the hotel and car rental was factored in.
Here are a couple of snippets from their website so you can get an idea on who they are:

What we are not.
Kayak.com is not a travel agency. With a travel agency, you pay a fee to get an airline reservation, a hotel room or a rental car. There are no fees with Kayak.com. We do not sell airline tickets or hotel rooms or rental car reservations. Instead, we direct you to other travel sites where you can make these purchases directly. Our way of helping you plan your travel gives you a more comprehensive list of your travel options. Really fast. And with no biases or hidden agenda. In short, you are in control of your travel choices. Since we search hundreds of travel websites (including travel agency sites), you now have to search only one: Kayak.com.
What we are.
Kayak.com is an excellent example (some would say the poster child) for Web 2.0. We are considered a meta-search engine and that means our website searches hundreds of other websites in real time for the best travel deals available. Kayak.com lets you look at a full range of airlines, hotels and car rental agencies quickly and efficiently based on the exact criteria you select. We have put a lot of thought into the design of our website, and it has won accolades from consumers and the press alike (2006 Forbes Best of the Web for example) because of its simple, straightforward design and ease of use. Building a better travel search product is what we are about here at Kayak.com.

Create newsletters online with LetterPop!

LetterPop!

letterpop.jpg

Need to whip up a newsletter in a matter of minutes? LetterPop! gives you the tools. If you can drag and drop, you can create a pretty dazzling newsletter with this web-based app.

It couldn’t be much easier to use: Choose a template, drop in some photos (you have to register if you want to upload photos of your own) and write your text. When you’re done, you can e-mail the newsletter to friends and family, print it, or post it online (LetterPop! supplies the URL).

This things rocks, though you can tell it’s still an early beta: The template selection is very limited, and you can’t change the headlines or tweak image sizes. Still, LetterPop is beautifully designed and fun to play with. It’s the first must-see web app of 2007. — Rick Broida
