12 Features Of Picasa That You Probably Don’t Know About

From Lifehacker:

Picasa Features

We have noticed that due to recent colossal influx of cloud based apps in software arena, many image editors and viewers are either totally drifting away from the core image organizing and editing features which a common user likes to see, or have started capitalizi

ng on everything, from online image sharing to social media components integration with long winded configuration process to go around with. That’s the reason why so many eminent image viewers and editors are being cascaded down the popularity graph.

So, what makes an image editing software stand out from the rest? I am not an advocate of outright simplicity but when it comes to choosing a good software which while offering all important features to catch up with fast track online image sharing blaze, also provides features to enhance image viewing and editing experience, only one springs readily to my mind, and that is, Picasa. Whether you want to brush up on your image editing skills, share photos with your friends and family, or simply like to enjoy an awesome image viewer on your desktop with web sync, Picasa is arguably the most viable option you can opt in for. In this post, we will try to delve deep into its most underrated features.

Movie Maker

Want to create a quick movie with your favorite music track playing in the background using a bunch of photos? Picasa Movie Maker can render assistance to you. Contrasting to other movie makers, it takes nothing more than a few minutes to specify the photo set you want to include followed by inserting music track, tinkering around with different slide transitions, overlying text, changing text color and background, before uploading it to YouTube.

Picture Collage

Creating an index page of all the pictures or an image collage is easy. Picasa Collage creator has a handful of exclusive features which are offered by only paid collage creators. The customizable color filling option enhances the overall look of the collage. You can give it a solid color or decorate the fill by using main/centered image color shades. Since you may need to create collage to not only view them on monitors, but on big multimedia screens and and HDTVs as well, Picasa presents a range of collage sizes, so you won’t have to manually resize the images to fit the screen. What will actually intrude your attention is the set of collage layouts it has to offer. Apart from heavy superimposition layout, which gives awesome abstract-art look to your pictures provided you have selected all the images very discreetly, it has 5 exquisite layouts which can be applied without having to rearrange the images or defining numbers of photos to set in one row or column.

Remove Low Quality Pictures

The ubiquitous indexing feature of Picasa is both loathed and lauded by users. It comes useful for those who want to create an amalgamate of all the images, including, small, large, high and low resolution images present in the system but it often takes forever to index all of them. Photography buffs tend to hate this because it’s a laborious task to remove image folders manually from Picasa Folder Manager. One of the most overlooked Picasa feature which offers panacea for such problems is Remove Low Quality Pictures. Picasa, despite being an effective photo quality identifier, lets you quickly remove all low quality images from your indexed image stack with a single click, making it easier to list down only HQ images.

Before printing any image, click Review to analyze the quality of image in question. In Review for Printing dialog box, you have option to either remove the selected picture or remove all the low quality Pictures.

View Photo Album Timeline

Users with humongous photo collection often find themselves in labyrinth of image files scattered in different locations. With Picasa installed on the system, it not only becomes fairly simple to track a specific photoset by date, size, and by many other Picasa’s native attributes, but also to streamline all the saved images within no time. Apart from managing images in customizable categories and tags, the Timeline feature saves a significant amount of time for searching photosets by date; month and year. Once indexed, it doesn’t take a lot of time to put your photo-sets in timeline. Right from the first image you saved on your system till the most recent addition, you can get a quick overview of all photo albums and run slideshow of selected ones without having to endure few clicks to manually find it from folder navigation bar.

Group By Faces

Picasa built-in faces search filter has truly changed the way we find people from an image library. The face-matching techniques deployed within Picasa search make it extremely easy to find people by their names. Using this technique, you can tag people by their names, so you can quickly search them later. Moreover, it not only just tag the photos but also remember the tagged faces. This automates the process of tagging pictures without having to tag same person’s face each time by his/her name.

named people 1

After Picasa has finished indexing all of your images, from People collection, select Unnamed People. It will show all the unnamed faces in your collection which are yet to be tagged.  Just enter the name of the person in the box present underneath his/her face to let Picasa always remember tagged face. In similar fashion, you can tag each unnamed face. Picasa creates a separate album for each tagged face, making it ingeniously easy to find your friends, family members and other people by their names.

Filter By Colors

Most photography enthusiasts love to analyze photos using different aspects, such as, by different shades used, by angles & color intensity, by natural image sharpness, etc., and what could be more interesting than to apply color-specific filters over an album. Apart from face recognition filters, Picasa has the ability to search different colors used in your photo collection. You can for instance view all the black & white images out of your collection or apply other condition with this search behavior to further narrow down the results. You can either apply color filter from Tools –> Experimental menu or just enter color: followed by color name to filter currently opened gallery.

Associate an Audio track with each album

What would be the best way to enjoy an image slideshow? Apart from the your favorite snapshots, a good background music gives a slideshow exactly what it needs. Many of you might have already specified the music folder from Options –> Slideshow, to play the tracks randomly when slideshow is running on your screen, but what about associating a track with each saved album? In Picasa, you can easily specify a music track with each album according to the theme of underlying images. You just have to right-click the album folder present in navigation bar, and select Edit Folder Description, enable Music checkbox and select the track you want to listen to with slideshow of selected album.

Publish Photo Album Directly To FTP Server

HTML publishing is not the hidden feature of Picasa. Many users embed HTML based photo album gallery in their websites after tweaking with published HTML elements. But direct uploading is something which repels many novice users, as it requires some extra FTP server related details to be specified prior to uploading. Publishing photo albums via FTP is easy as piece of cake and takes only a few minutes to configure. Picasa natively offers an easy to use FTP account manager which can hold multiple FTP server info, so that you can quickly upload and publish HTML based galleries to your websites.

add account 1

First off, select Publish via FTP from Experimental menu, choose the layout, export it and then add a FTP account. It requires you to enter FTP domain, FTP Root, username and password for direct publishing.

Batch Edit Photos

The first step after importing snapshots from your digital camera is to streamline orientation of the images. Changing landscape to portrait and vice versa is a one click process, but when thousands of images are to be processed, it becomes a pretty tiring task. In such times, when large editing is required, Picasa built-in Batch Edit feature come useful. Batch editing is provided by many image editors out there, but Picasa batch edit features outweighs them all. Apart from renaming and applying clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation over images in bulk, it also allows fixing red eye effect, sharpening images to defined level, and adjusting color and contrast of images in one go.

Face Movie

Face Movie is one terrific latest addition to Picasa. Using all the features of Picasa Movie Maker, it takes a novel approach to create movies by keeping the face of person aligned all the time during transitions. The best part is that you wont need to manually mark the face area of the person. Picasa, by using faces filter, identifies all face areas in selected photos, allowing you to create a face movie with a single click.

Below you can watch a demo video of Face Movie feature.

Create a Gift CD

Want to share, lets say, birthday snaps with your friends and family? Why not make them a CD having all of your favorite birthday pictures on it. Picasa Gift CD feature is out to simplify the process of writing images to disc. Just select the snaps from album, under Create menu, select Create a Gift CD, specify image size followed by disc name, and finally click Burn to write the selected album(s) to CD.

burn disc 1

Annotate Places On Google Map

With direct Google Map integration, Picasa makes it easy for users to annotate favorite places with images saved in their system. Google Maps bar lets you search the place which is to be marked. Once you get to the place, select the image from the album, click annotator on Google Maps, and finally click the place to annotate it with your image.

Looking at the slew of features that Picasa has to offer, suffice to say it’s one of the smartest image editor out there. We’ve tried to cover most overlooked yet brilliant features, and may have missed out on many. If you’re using any hidden feature which should’ve been included in the list, drop it off in the comments section below.

Getting Free Dropbox Space

From Lifehacker: Cheapskate’s Guide to Getting Free Dropbox Space

Avatar for Whitson Gordon Whitson GordonThe Cheapskate's Guide to Getting Free Dropbox SpaceDropbox is one of the best file synchronization tools around, but you start out with only 2 GB of space, which isn't always enough to sync music or collaborate with your co-workers. Here's how to increase your storage without paying anything.

You won't get to the 50 GB level with just these free methods, but you can certainly get enough space to keep your Dropbox from overflowing. Here's a comprehensive list of all the ways you can get extra space into your Dropbox.

Many of you are already using Dropbox, and know how the referral link system works. Sending out your referral link is a great way to get extra space, but please do not post your referral links in the comments of this article. Unlike sending an email to your friends or posting your link on Twitter, we'd have tens or hundreds of referral links in the same place, which is just plain spam. Feel free to post in the comments if you have other great ways to score free space or other ideas on how to effectively share referrals, but if you post your link in the comments without someone asking for one, you will get warned or banned.

Click the Getting Started Tab

The Cheapskate's Guide to Getting Free Dropbox SpaceWhen you log into Dropbox, you'll notice a "Getting Started" tab on the top of the interface. If you complete five of the steps under that tab, Dropbox will give you an extra 250 MB of space for free. The steps are extremely easy to complete, and if you've been using Dropbox for awhile, you've probably already completed most or all of them, like:

  1. Take the Dropbox Tour
  2. Install Dropbox on Your Computer
  3. Put Files in your Dropbox Folder
  4. Install Dropbox on Other Computers You Use
  5. Share a Folder with Friends or Colleagues
  6. Invite Some Friends to Join Dropbox
  7. Install Dropbox on Your Mobile Device

Once you've completed five of those things, you should see an extra 250 MB of space show up in your Dropbox.

Connect Dropbox to Your Social Media Accounts

The Cheapskate's Guide to Getting Free Dropbox SpaceIf you're a Twitter or Facebook user, you can get up to 768 MB of free space by performing a few simple social media-related tasks on Dropbox's "free" page. Most of them are quite simple—connecting your Twitter and Facebook account to Dropbox, following @Dropbox on Twitter, sending them a one-line feedback message, and tweeting about Dropbox to your followers. With the exception of the last one (which we'll come back to in a moment), they're all very easy things that will take just a few minutes to do.

Refer Your Friends

This is the big one. The best way to get extra Dropbox space is to send your referral link to others, which, after they sign up with it, will give you (and them) and extra of 250 MB of space in their accounts. So, if you get four people to sign up for Dropbox using your referral link, that's an extra gigabyte for you. There are a few good ways to go about this (without getting spammy), and you can seriously increase your space with just a few choice words and link.

Post Your Referral Link on Facebook and Twitter

Full size

If you have a lot of followers on Twitter or Facebook, you can try tweeting or sharing your referral link and explaining to people what Dropbox is and why it's awesome (Facebook's a little easier since there's a larger character limit). Anyone who isn't already using Dropbox—which, if you have the right audience, is quite a few people—can sign up with your link and give you some extra space. Obviously, you don't want to get too spammy with this, or your friends will start to hate you—I'd say just one post on each network during peak hours (lunchtime, Sunday evenings) is more than enough to get you a few nibbles.

Send it Out to Your Friends and Family

Email is also a pretty great way to send out your referral link to your closer friends and family. In an email, you can explain in a little more detail what Dropbox is and why it's awesome, and how it can actually be a great productivity tool. The extra length provided by email (and the closer you are to the people you're sending it to) can help guarantee a few extra signups from people, and get you more space.

Other Tactics

Some of you guys have mentioned that you've even posted it on off-topic forums you frequent and other online outlets, which is another great place. I even had a friend who sent out an email to his law school classmates with a heap of tech tips to help them get through the class, in which he included his Dropbox link. He now has 20 GB of space from referrals alone.

The key, really, is finding a large enough and appropriate enough audience to get people to actually sign up. Dropbox really is a great tool, so it's not even like you have to lie to tell people why it's great. The less tech-savvy your audience, the better (if you try to send it out to a bunch of Lifehacker readers, you probably won't get many bites), and the more use they have for it (say, students or people with more than one computer), the more likely they'll be to check it out.

Connect a .Edu Email Address to Your Account

Full size

Connecting your account with a .edu email address will double all the space you get from referrals, which is a great way to bump up your space quickly. That means you get 500 MB for each referral instead of 250—so if you referred 4 people, that's two whole gigs instead of one. Not bad, especially considering many non-students still have access to their .edu email address or an alumni address at their college.

The best part about this is that everything is retroactive, so if you've given out a bunch of referrals but not linked your .edu email address yet, Dropbox will double all your previous referral space once you link it up—so even if you're not planning on sending out your link anymore, you should still link the two now for extra space.

Keep an Eye Out for Other Dropbox-Related Events

Every once in a while, Dropbox will come out with other ways to get extra space, like their recent Dropquest scavenger hunt. In addition, you never know when they're going to add new features like the ones above, so keep an eye on Lifehacker to stay up to date on all the goings-on at Dropbox—don't worry, if there's a way to get more Dropbox space, we'll find it and post it as soon as we can.

There are quite a few ways beyond referrals to get extra space, but the meat of your space is going to come from sending out those referral links. If you've got a tip, trick, or cool place for sharing those links for maximum effectiveness, please share it with us in the comments (but again, don't post your own referral link, or so help me God I will mark it as spam).

Track a plane flight on the Web

Can I track a plane flight on the Web?

I always get the airport early, even when my children's flights end up being late. Makes me crazy, but I hate calling up the airline status update computer because I hate talking to automated systems like that. Blech! Is there some way I can check flight status online?

Dave's Answer:

The phone-based flight status system? I haven't used one of those for eons, I didn't realize they were still an option!

Fortunately, my sister's flying in to meet me in Southern California the day I got your query, so it'll let me demonstrate some of the many super cool ways you can track a flight online nowadays, without ever leaving the comfort of your home!

The easiest - and this might surprise you - is that you can just do a Google search for the flight. Enter airline and flight number, and it'll show you that flight's status.

For example, my sister is on Alaska Airlines flight 582, so that's what I type into Google:

airplane flight status 1

Looks good. Looks like she's on time and scheduled to land in about 45 minutes, 7 minutes early. Which reminds me, I need to go pick her up!

If I finish this blog entry up first, however, :-) I'll instead click on the link shown and get a bit more information, from the site "flightstats.com":

airplane flight status 2

Very cool. Even cooler, though, is what the site flightaware.com can show, because it can place the plane over a map. Look for it as one of the other top matches for your airline flight update search on Google, click on it, and:

airplane flight status 3

Even better, there are all sorts of other stats that the site can display about a particular plane flight:

airplane flight status 4

And just for completeness sake, I went to Alaska Airlines and clicked on "Check Flight Status", just to be presented with this information:

airplane flight status 5

Still, it's hard to beat just typing in the airline and flight number into Google!

In any case, gotta go, hope this is helpful!
